The Story

Hebrews is a sermon in letter form, written to Jewish Christians tempted to abandon Jesus and go back to Judaism. The argument is relentless: Jesus is better — better than angels, better than Moses, better than the Levitical priests, better than the old covenant sacrifices. Chapter 11's "hall of faith" showcases believers throughout history who endured by faith, and chapter 12 urges the readers to run the race looking to Jesus. Going back to the old system would be like trading a mansion for a tent.

Make Me Care

Jesus is better than anything you're tempted to go back to

Hebrews was written to people tempted to go backward — back to the old system, back to what felt safe. The entire book is an argument: Jesus is better. Better than angels, Moses, the old priesthood, the old sacrifices. Whatever you're tempted to go back to — old habits, old coping mechanisms, old identity — Jesus is better.

What are you tempted to go back to — and what would it take to believe that Jesus is actually better?
